Geyser Not Heating Water? Common Causes and How to Fix It

There is nothing worse than a cold shower on a chilly morning because your geyser is not heating water. Most heating problems come down to a few common causes. Here is what to check and how to get your hot water back.

1. Faulty Heating Element

The heating element is what actually warms the water. It is the most common reason a geyser stops heating. Over time, elements burn out or get coated in mineral scale, losing their ability to heat. A burnt-out element needs replacement by a technician β€” after which hot water usually returns immediately.

2. Faulty Thermostat

The thermostat controls the temperature and switches the element on and off. If it fails, the geyser may not heat at all, or it may overheat and trip. A faulty thermostat is a common, affordable replacement.

3. Sediment and Scale Build-up

In hard-water areas, minerals settle at the bottom of the tank and coat the element. This scale insulates the element, so it takes longer to heat water β€” or stops heating effectively. Periodic tank flushing and de-scaling restore performance and extend the geyser's life.

4. Tripped MCB or Power Issue

Before assuming the worst, check the basics. A tripped MCB, a blown fuse or a loose connection can cut power to the geyser. Check your switchboard and ensure the geyser's switch and indicator light are working.

5. Reset (Thermal Cut-out) Tripped

Many geysers have a safety cut-out that trips if the water overheats. If it has tripped, the geyser will not heat until it is reset β€” which should be done by a technician, because a repeatedly tripping cut-out points to an underlying fault.

6. Wiring or Capacitor Faults

Loose, corroded or damaged wiring can interrupt power to the element. These electrical faults should always be handled by a professional for safety.

Only Getting a Little Hot Water?

If you get some hot water but it runs out quickly or is only lukewarm, the likely causes are a partially failed heating element, a thermostat set too low, heavy sediment in the tank, or a tank that is simply too small for your needs. A service will pinpoint which.

Quick Checks You Can Do Safely

  • Confirm the geyser switch is on and the indicator light glows.
  • Check the MCB/fuse for the geyser has not tripped.
  • Make sure the temperature knob is set high enough.
  • Give it enough time to heat a full tank.

Never open the geyser body or touch internal wiring yourself β€” water and electricity together are dangerous.

When to Call a Technician

If the basics are fine but there is still no hot water, the element, thermostat or safety cut-out likely needs professional attention. Prompt repair not only restores hot water but prevents small electrical faults from becoming safety hazards.
